    temporal happiness Did Faust really exist or was he an imaginary character If he did exist who was he and what did he do What is the truth behind the stories that have evolved around him What induced so many poets composers and fine artists to choose this everyday character torn between right and wrong wanting to possess something special be it omniscience or love to be their protagonist Even reading a multitude of studies will not necessarily take us closer to the answer One thing is for sure Goethe s Faust which is perhaps the most popular literary interpretation of this theme and the main piece of the poet s oeuvre has inspired several composers to write pieces for the concert hall or the stage The idea of setting the theme to music appeared already during Goethe s lifetime but the poet was not impressed by the endeavours In a letter written in 1829 he wrote that the music should be like Don Juan in character Mozart would have had to compose the music for Faust Robert Schumann Scenes from Goethe s Faust Szenen aus Goethes Faust is an oratorio written in 1858 by Schumann featuring soloists a chorus
